Standing up to the downturn - HDC support for businesses

This is a list of actions which local authorities can take and what the District Council is doing to support businesses:

  • Encourage small business rate relief uptake

The Council includes information on the small business rate relief in the leaflets enclosed with the Business Rates bills.

  • Look at procurement arrangements - think how LA purchasing power can be used to support local businesses directly
  • Use local skills and businesses in procurement of goods and services

The Council cannot act restrictively in its procurement practices under the law. However, for small contracts and purchase of services the Council uses local companies and trades people.

  • Publicise the business and employment support that is available to companies and staff
  • Promote advice and support for small businesses working with organisations like Business Link

Our business webpages provide clear and accessible links to sources of assistance such as Business Link

  • Provide local lead liaison for companies in distress - bring in the various agencies that may be able to help

We will assess each case as appropriate.

  • Pay suppliers on time, if not early. Where possible, pay in advance rather than in arrears.

In the main, the Council already pays invoices early.

  • Engage with local businesses and seek to put more Council business their way

Where appropriate, the Council seeks to use local businesses

  • Provide business start up premises

We are actively promoting project to establish a centre for new business start up in Market Harborough (Harborough Innovation Centre).

  • Provide free parking in certain areas or at certain times to attract shoppers
