Weekend Wanderer walks return and celebrate Silver Sunday! Sunday 5 October from 10am - we are off to Peatling Parva
What are Weekend Wanderer walks?
Weekend Wanderer walks are for those people who enjoy a longer walk through the beautiful Harborough (and sometimes further afield!) countryside. The walks will cross fields and stiles and last between 2 and 4 hours and usually involve a refreshment stop in a pub or cafe.
Silver Sunday - for one day every year, Silver Sunday provides those in their silver years with an opportunity to get out of the house, try new things and meet new people in an effort to combat the loneliness and isolation felt by many older people.

When is the next walk taking place?
So, normally we walk on a Saturday but for a change, we have got a couple of walks planned for a Sunday instead and our second Sunday Weekend Wanderers walk takes place on Sunday 5 October, 2014.
We will be meeting from 10am (to use toilets etc.) at The Shires Inn, Main St, Peatling Parva, Leicestershire, LE17 5PU. Website for the pub is http://www.theshiresinn.co.uk/contact/
About the walk - distance and duration
This is a rural walk of approximately 4 miles on meadows, tracks, a field of arable and a short stretch on a fairly quiet road.
On the outward section there are about 7 stiles with a similar amount on the inward section, only one of which was quite ropey and this may be improved on the day.
The scenery and views are good with ample mature trees and a babbling brook, some damp ground/mud in places is possible so please be prepared.
Nearby villages can be seen but none are visited.
We shall have a short break if time permits, I estimate approximately 2.5 hours for the walk at a standard pace. The walk is open to all – you don’t have to eat at the pub to join the walk, a few extra cars may be ok and cars can also be parked in the street. Car sharing is best!
What should I wear / take?
Wear or take clothing that is fit for the weather. Waterproof, sturdy footwear is needed for these walks. Please ensure that you have enough drinking water, sun protection and refreshments to consume during the walk. If icy underfoot, walking poles may be an advantage. High visibility tops welcome but not essential. If you are planning to stay for a meal at a pub following the walk, non-muddy i.e. a change of footwear is needed.
Do I need to book a place?
Colin has very kindly organised for walkers who would like to join him for a Carvery at The Shires Inn following the walk. Eating with the group following the walk is entirely optional. If this is something that you would like to do, please follow these instructions -
we have to be ready to eat at 1.30 pm (i.e. changed into clean footwear and having bought drinks at the bar
We only have 14 seats available for the carvery, most pubs offering this are very busy, so group numbers are somewhat limited, therefore I’ll add you to my food list in the order that you book the carvery with me (contact telephone number / email address below)
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org by Wednesday 1st October to reserve your place. The price is £10.95 for one adult although other prices apply for two and three courses. You may be able to book direct with The Shires after the 1st October, if they’re not fully booked by then – they wouldn’t allocate me more than 15 places, one I have already taken and discount was not possible on a Sunday either.
No! Bookings are not necessary. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the stated walk start time at the meeting point. If you want to check whether (because of weather conditions) the walk is going ahead on the day, please call Colin on 07939 076486.
Do I need to pay to attend the walk?
