Stop and Tell Hate Awareness Week – January 23rd – 27th 2012

This year’s ‘Stop & Tell’ hate awareness campaign is aimed at encouraging people, particularly those with mental health difficulties to report incidents of hate.

A hate incident is any incident where you or someone else has been targeted because they or you are believed to be different or any incident you believe was motivated by age, disability, gender identity, race, religion/belief or sexual orientation.

During the week staff from Harborough District Council, Leicestershire Police & Harborough Action Team will be undertaking talks & presentations to community groups within the District to talk about how, where and why to report incidents and crimes which are hate related.

Also, a decorative mosaic – featuring a specially-created abstract design - will be unveiled at Harborough Library. It has been designed and donated by the Lottery-funded Leicester Community Care scheme Care4arts, which introduces people with learning or physical disabilities to various cultural art forms and promotes the use of art as an alternative therapy.

The mosaic will be used to promote the importance of reporting hate crime and incidents.

If you would like to arrange for us to complete a talk for a group you are involved with or would like further help and information please contact Julie Bellamy , Community Safety Officer on 01858 821350 or e-mail j.bellamy@harborough.gov.uk

No one should have to tolerate hate incidents so if you are the victim, witness or third party who is aware of an incident then report it.  Hate incidents can be reported to Harborough District Council, Voluntary Action South Leicestershire, South Leicestershire Citizens Advice Bureau and the Police. They can also be reported online via www.harborough.gov.uk/reporthate , www.leics.gov.uk/reporthate or at www.stamp-it-out.co.uk/

If we don’t know about it we can’t change it.
