District Council elections

Elections are held every 4 years for the 37 councillors who represent the 25 wards making up Harborough District Council.

The next elections will take place on Thursday 7 May 2015, on the same day as the elections for the UK parliament and for the 45 parish councils within the Harborough district.

Stand as a district councillor at the May 2015 elections

Anyone who is qualified can stand as a candidate at the elections on 7 May 2015. Existing district councillors need top seek re-election alongside any new candidates who may elect to stand. View the nomination pack for the district elections in May 2015 (PDF, 444KB).

If you wish to stand as a candidate in the district council elections then you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old on the day of your nomination
  • Be a British citizen, an eligible Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of any other member state of the European Union

You must also meet at least 1 of the following 4 qualifications:

  • You are, and will continue to be, registered as a local government elector for the local authority area in which you wish to stand from the day of your nomination onwards
  • You have occupied as owner or tenant any land or other premises in the local authority area during the whole of the 12 months before the day of your nomination and the day of election
  • Your main or only place of work during the 12 months prior to the day of your nomination and the day of election has been in the local authority area
  • You have lived in the local authority area during the whole of the 12 months before the day of your nomination and the day of election

The Local Government Association has published advice on becoming a councillor.

People that cannot be a candidate (disqualifications)

You cannot be a candidate if at the time of your nomination and on the day of the election:

  • You are employed by the local authority or hold a paid office under the authority (including joint boards or committees)
  • You hold a politically restricted post
  • You are the subject of a bankruptcy restrictions order or interim order
  • You have been sentenced to a term of imprisonment of three months or more (including a suspended sentence), without the option of a fine, during the five years before polling day
  • You have been disqualified under the Representation of the People Act 1983 (which covers corrupt or illegal electoral practices and offences relating to donations)

Nomination Papers

Packs containing the nomination papers and other related forms and guidance will be available from the Elections Office at The Symington Building, Adam and Eve Street, Market Harborough (telephone 01858 821335) from the 23 March 2015. A checklist for nominations will be included in the packs.

Your nomination paper will need the signature of 10 registered electors (subscribers) from within the ward within which you are standing.

Delivery of Nomination Papers

Completed nomination papers can be accepted by the Returning Officer or his staff between the 30 March (the date of publication of the Notice of Election) and 4pm on the 9 April 2015. An informal check of papers can be arranged by prior appointment with the Elections Office.

Nomination papers must be delivered to the Returning Officer (or his staff) by hand. Papers submitted by other means cannot be accepted.
