Published Monday 16 January 2017

Have your say on proposals to improve the transport network in and around Market Harborough.

A consultation has been launched on a range of proposals to help the town cope with increased traffic as it continues to grow.

People can have their say on the plans, put forward by Leicestershire County Council working with Harborough District Council.

Potential improvements being considered include:

  • Junction and traffic signal improvements
  • Considering the upgrade of Welland Park Road into the A4304
  • Extending and enhancing walking and cycling facilities
  • Localised public transport infrastructure improvement
  • Lorry weight restrictions
  • Increasing the height of the Rockingham Road rail bridge
  • Improving the streetscape
  • A possible relief road

Councillor Peter Osborne, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "We are really keen to hear people’s views on our plans, as well as their own suggestions on what they think would help make the transport network in the area better.

“Market Harborough is a growing town and it’s clear we need to make highways improvements to help meet future local housing and employment needs.

“The feedback we receive from this consultation is really important as it will put us in a stronger position to secure funding to make key improvements a reality.

Councillor Jo Brodrick, Harborough District Council’s portfolio holder for planning and regeneration, said: “The district council looks forward to hearing the views of local people on the proposed transport priorities for Market Harborough.

"The final strategy will be a key document to sit alongside our new Local Plan and guide how developer funding is used, as well as support future bids for transport projects.”

A drop-in event will be held at the Market Harborough Indoor Market on Saturday 28 January where people can view the plans, speak to council officers and ask questions.

You can view the plans and submit your comments on the Leicestershire County Council website at www.leicestershire.gov.uk/harborough-plans

You can also respond / request a hard copy of the documents by emailing MHTransportStrategy@leics.gov.uk or by calling 0116 305 0001.

The proposals can also be viewed at Harborough District Council offices, based in The Symington Building in Adam and Eve Street, Market Harborough.

The consultation launched today (Monday 16 January) and will run until Friday 24 March.

The findings will be considered by Harborough District Council’s Executive and the county council’s ruling Cabinet, which will be asked to adopt a transport strategy for Market Harborough.

Subject to agreement, the county council will then seek to secure the money needed to implement the schemes.
