Council launches new support programme to help residents into work
Published Friday 10 July 2026Residents across the Harborough district are being encouraged to take advantage of a new programme designed to help them move closer to employment, training and job readiness.
The Skills, Training and Employment Pathways (STEP) programme, delivered by Harborough District Council, offers personalised free support for anyone aged 16 and over who is looking to enter employment, change careers, return to work, develop new skills or explore future opportunities.
The programme provides a single point of contact for residents, helping them access the guidance, advice and support they need to achieve their goals and overcome barriers that may be preventing them from progressing.
At the heart of the programme is a one-to-one ‘Get to Know You’ session, giving residents the opportunity to discuss their circumstances, aspirations and any challenges they may be facing. From there, a dedicated STEP adviser will work with them to identify the most appropriate support and develop a tailored plan to help them move forward.
Recognising that employment journeys are different for everyone, STEP takes a holistic approach and supports residents facing a range of challenges, including housing issues, health and wellbeing concerns, financial pressures, caring responsibilities, confidence, digital access and other personal circumstances. Where specialist support is required, participants can be referred to trusted partner organisations.
Support available through the programme includes:
- One-to-one support from a dedicated STEP adviser
- Career planning and goal setting
- CV writing and interview preparation
- Job searching and application support
- Access to training, qualifications and skills development opportunities
- Confidence-building support
- Signposting and referrals to specialist services
Residents may also be connected with organisations offering support with housing, health and wellbeing, financial and debt advice, disability services and digital inclusion.
For those ready to take the next step into employment, STEP offers practical help to identify transferable skills, explore suitable career pathways and access local job opportunities and recruitment activity.
Cllr Rosita Page, Cabinet Lead for Business and Tourism, said: "Whether someone is looking for their first job, returning to work after a break, considering a career change or simply exploring future opportunities, STEP is designed to provide the right support at the right time.
"We know that finding employment or training isn't always straightforward and that people can face a range of challenges along the way. STEP takes a personalised approach, helping residents build confidence, develop skills and access the support they need to achieve their goals.
"We would encourage anyone who feels they could benefit from the programme to get in touch and find out how STEP can help them take their next step."
By working closely with individuals and local support organisations, the programme aims to improve access to employment, skills development and training opportunities across the district, helping residents achieve positive and lasting outcomes.
