Record tourism figures put Harborough district in the spotlight

New tourism figures have highlighted Harborough district’s growing appeal as a visitor destination, with the latest Scarborough Tourism Economic Activity Monitor (STEAM) report showing that the local visitor economy was worth £209.29 million in 2025.

The figures underline the district’s continued success in attracting visitors seeking everything from relaxing countryside escapes and heritage attractions to vibrant market towns, independent food and drink venues and unique local experiences.

Additionally, the arts, culture and creativity are becoming a major strength and a rapidly developing unique selling point for the area.  

Whether enjoying a summer break in rural Leicestershire, discovering the area’s rich history, experiencing its growing creative scene, or spending time exploring its picturesque villages and landscapes, more people than ever are choosing Harborough district as a place to stay, explore and enjoy.  

The council recognises the vital contribution made by local tourism and hospitality businesses, attractions, accommodation providers, creative practitioners and event organisers, whose commitment and passion help create memorable experiences for visitors and support the district’s thriving visitor economy.  

Key highlights from the 2025 STEAM report are:

• Tourism generated £209.29 million for the local economy, an increase of 6.1% from £197.34 million in 2024
• 2.78 million visitors came to Harborough district in 2025, representing a 3.3% increase on the previous year
• Visitor days increased to 3.25 million, up 3.3%, demonstrating that visitors are spending more time in the district
• Day visitors spent £133.51 million, while overnight visitors contributed £75.78 million to the local economy
• The tourism sector supported 1,865 full-time equivalent jobs, reinforcing its importance to the district’s economic prosperity.

The continued growth in visitor numbers and spending reflects the strength and diversity of Harborough district’s offer, from our independent businesses, cultural arts scene and attractions to the events and experiences that encourage people to return year after year.  

“It is particularly encouraging to see more visitors choosing to spend longer in the district, bringing benefits to local shops, hospitality venues and accommodation providers. We are grateful to the businesses, organisations and volunteers whose efforts help create a welcoming and memorable experience for visitors.
