Record number of free Heritage Open Days events coming to Harborough district

Residents and visitors will have the opportunity to discover Harborough district's rich heritage, culture and history next month as buildings and venues across the district throw open their doors for the national Heritage Open Days festival.

Heritage Open Days is England's largest festival of history and culture, with thousands of events taking place across the country.

This year, Harborough district is celebrating a record number of participating events, with 17 free activities and experiences on offer during the festival, taking place from 11 to 20 September.

From historic buildings and museums to churches, canals and countryside walks, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Visitors can marvel at Leicestershire's only surviving post mill, uncover the mysteries of a Masonic temple, explore extraordinary local stories at Lutterworth and District Museum, discover the origins of Foxton Locks and try their hand at whittling and canal art.

Families can enjoy creative activities, while history enthusiasts can delve into the haunting stories of the witch trials at Horninghold Church and follow a dedicated witch walking trail.

Other highlights include the Marriage Exhibition at St Mary's Church in Lutterworth, guided walks around Lutterworth Country Park and Cotesbach, heritage tree trails in Market Harborough, and the Festival of St Morrell at Hallaton Museum featuring bell ringing, live music and more.

This year's national theme, "Everyday Histories", is brought to life through a range of events across the district, particularly at Market Harborough's iconic Symington Building with collaborations from Harborough Museum, Leicestershire County Council Collections and TwoQuArts. Visitors can learn about the everyday lives of workers in the former corset factory, where garments worn by women around the world were once produced.

On 12 and 19 September, guided tours will provide access to parts of the historic building that are not normally open to the public. Visitors can also take part in interactive craft activities and explore displays from Symington's renowned corset and swimwear collection.

Harborough District is also playing a key role in Heritage Open Days' New Wave youth engagement programme. Ten organisations across Leicester and Leicestershire have been selected to work with young people to develop innovative events and activities, bringing fresh perspectives to local heritage and encouraging more young adults to engage with the festival.

Heritage Open Days events across the district have also been supported through Harborough District Council grants, helping local organisations enhance their programmes and create engaging experiences for visitors.
