What is an animal activity star rating and how are they calculated?

Each animal business that falls within the scope of licensing is inspected by an officer and given a rating from one to five stars. The only exception being those businesses that keep or train animals for exhibition, which do not receive a star rating and the licence is issued for three years. 

Star ratings are calculated using a scoring matrix which is shown below. This matrix looks at the risk of business as well as the level of standards they meet.

To use the public register, please select 'Public Access Portal', then click the 'Advanced' search tab then 'Licences'. You can then search for each individual animal licensing activity by completing the search field boxes, to view the star rating of each premises please ensure to click onto the 'additional' tab.

One Star - Requires improvement
Businesses that achieve a one star are not meeting all of the minimum standards as set out in the relevant regulations and guidance document. 

Two and Three Stars - Good standards
Businesses that achieve a rating of two or three stars are meeting the minimum standards as set out in the relevant regulations and guidance documents. A business with two stars is classed as high risk and a business with three stars is classed as low risk.

Four and Five Stars - Excellent standards
Businesses that achieve a rating of four or five stars are meeting all of the minimum standards as well as the higher standards criteria as set out in the relevant regulations and guidance document. A business with four stars is classed as high risk and a business with five stars is classed as low risk.
