Improvements at council-owned car parks

Published Tuesday 29 August 2017

Improvements to car parking across the district, which will ensure parking provision works for generations to come, are set to be introduced.

Harborough District Council’s new parking order will come into force from 4 September 2017 with revised parking charges and a raft of improvements.

New pay and display machines, soon to have cashless payment options, have already been introduced in recent weeks at all council-owned car parks in the Harborough district.

Other planned improvements include payment by phone option, better layout and signage, better disabled parking provision, coach parking, electric vehicle charge points, more ‘pop and shop’ 30 minute bays and new tariffs. It will also be free to park in council-owned car parks on bank holidays.

Councillor Neil Bannister, Harborough District Council’s portfolio holder for environment and regulation, said: “These improvements will help meet the growing needs of residents, businesses and visitors. We need to use our car parks efficiently and effectively and, whilst we have revised car parking charges, they are the first increases in five years and still compare favourably with many similar market towns across the country.”

Last year, the district council published an independent report which set out a number of recommendations on how car parking facilities can meet the future needs of residents, businesses and visitors. These were incorporated into a draft Parking Strategy with feedback invited from the public.

Councillors approved the revised parking order earlier this year.
