Work carried out without meeting regulations

Building regulations help to maintain the health, safety and welfare of people using buildings, and we must take action when they are not followed.

The main ways regulations are not met are:

  • Failure to deposit a building regulation application before starting building works
  • Failure by the builder to give the required notice at specified stages of the work
  • Failure to comply with the requirements of the regulations in carrying out building work on site

We will always try to resolve issues through consultations with owners and builders. However, we have the legal power to deal with issues if required.

If the matter is sufficiently serious, we may also take legal enforcement action to have the deficient work remedied.

Our enforcement policy is based upon the Government’s principles for enforcement to make sure that individuals and businesses are treated correctly inline with Government guidance.
