Activating digital skills and physical fun

Free wellbeing sessions were held across the Harborough District last week to help people aged over 60 improve their digital skills and keep active.

The events were held at Lutterworth, Fleckney and Houghton on the Hill, hosted by Harborough District Council in partnership with Willmott Dixon, the construction contractor leading the build of the Harborough Grow On Space project.

Residents hopped on the ‘Digi-van’ to receive personal advice and guidance on digital issues, from how to download a mobile phone app to learning how to Skype. Equipment was provided and guests brought their own devices too.

Attendees were also given tips on cyber security and how to protect themselves from modern digital scams. After a demonstration by the Council’s team, guests also enjoyed games of boccia and new age kurling helping promote an active lifestyle. During the events Willmott Dixon gifted 10 free boccia kits which will be donated to district parish groups which have shown an interest in setting up their own clubs.

Councillor Nunn, portfolio holder for Wellbeing, attended the Fleckney session and enjoyed a game of Boccia said: “These events are a wonderful opportunity for communities to connect socially and try different fun sports. ‘It’s also so important that we support Harborough District residents by encouraging digital confidence as technology changes so quickly. The staff at this event provided free and unbiased support which residents can trust.”

If any residents would like to set up their own physical activity sessions, the Council’s Buy Back Scheme can pay for, and provide, equipment which can be paid back over time http://www.harboroughsport.org.uk/buyback
