Licence to collect money for a charity

You must have a permit to collect money for a registered charity on streets or house-to-house.

Street collections

A permit is required for general street collections for a registered charity. Sponsored walks do not need to be licensed but 'moving collections' such as carnival processions and events which involve collecting from the public along a route will require a permit.

Due to high demand only one collection may take place on any one day in any one location in the Harborough district. You can check if the date you want to make your collection is available by contacting us at licensing@harborough.gov.uk.

If you wish to collect in Market Harborough, please list the streets you wish to collect on in the application form. If you wish to collect on The Square in the town centre you must specify this on the application form as we will need to check whether any events are being held there and if a collection is possible. It is not possible to have a stand/gazebo etc when collecting on The Square.

Some areas in Market Harborough town centre are privately owned and you would need to contact the landowner for permission and a permit to collect there:

St Mary's Place - please contact Mr J Perry at The Management Suite, 17a St. Mary’s Place, Market Harborough, Leicestershire, LE16 7DS

Outside Sainsburys - please contact J Sainsbury Plc, St. Mary’s Place, Market Harborough, Leicestershire, LE16 7DR

The Old Grammar School (directly underneath it) - please contact The Market Harborough and The Bowdens Charity, 10 Fairfield Road. Market Harborough, Leics, LE16 9QQ

You must be a registered charity to perform a house to house collection.

Direct Debit Collections

If you will only be collecting direct debit information i.e. no cash donations, then you do not need a collection permit and so do not need to complete an application form. Please advise us by email licensing@harborough.gov.uk of any dates you will be undertaking a direct debit only collection in the Harborough District as a matter of courtesy so that we can note it in our collections calendar.
