People in the Harborough district are already benefiting from a scheme to help them train as HGV drivers.

Earlier in September, Harborough District Council launched its new Commercial Driving Licence Support Scheme offering an opportunity to get HGV (heavy goods vehicle) driver training to help local people seek higher paid, prosperous and secure employment within the logistics sector.

Lorry driverSince then, three local people have already been supported, in partnership with Leicester-based Hughes Driving Training with grants totally nearly £5,000 for Class 1 and 2 HGV driver training.

More people are being encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity, which has been developed in response to the nationwide shortage of commercial drivers to meet the needs of the growing distribution industry, and the resulting upturn in levels of pay in the sector.

Cllr Phil King, Leader of Harborough District Council, said: “This is a great start, and we hope to continue to attract local people to apply for this scheme to support a key sector at the heart of our district, as well as upskilling our community to grow the local economy.”

Businesses, training providers, or individuals interested in the scheme can contact the Council’s Grants and Funding Officer Jaswinder Powar for more information on 07874 876579 or by emailing j.powar@harborough.gov.uk
