Council enhances connectivity in Market Harborough town centre with free Wi-FiPublished Thursday 30 November 2023
Visitors and businesses in Market Harborough town centre can now enjoy complimentary internet access, thanks to a collaborative effort between Harborough District Council and its suppliers.
The newly installed infrastructure allows anyone with a mobile device to connect to Wi-Fi without incurring additional costs.
Shoppers strolling through The Square can access the free Wi-Fi by selecting ‘Market Harborough Guest Wi-Fi’ on their devices. Registration is a one-time process, as devices will automatically connect on subsequent visits. Opting in also grants users access to the latest information on local offers, shopping promotions, events, trails, and other town centre news.
Harborough District Council plans to extend the free Wi-Fi initiative to Lutterworth next year. The system, once live, will not only provide internet connectivity but also track visitor patterns, offering valuable insights into the economic activity of both market towns in the Harborough district.
Cllr Phil Knowles, Leader of Harborough District Council and Cabinet lead for Culture, Leisure, Economy, and Tourism, emphasised the importance of keeping market towns digitally connected and said: “By introducing free Wi-Fi, we are improving connectivity, enabling shoppers to access their social media, email, and internet applications without using their data or cutting short their stay. This exciting initiative also showcases the wonderful services and products offered by businesses.”
This project has received £69,700 for three years from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
The UK Shared Prosperity Fund is a central pillar of the UK government’s Levelling Up agenda and provides £2.6 billion of funding for local investment by March 2025.
