Artwork proposals for revamped council building

Three artists are now working on proposals for a new work of art to be unveiled in The Symington Building in Market Harborough.

Arts Council logoArts Council England has given a grant to Harborough District Council to enable the commission of a new work of art to celebrate The Symington Building’s past, present and future.

Following a widely-published brief, thirty artists from across the UK expressed an interest, from which three were selected by a panel to prepare proposals for exhibition in March before the final commission is awarded in April.
The panel included elected members of the Council, representation from Harborough Museum and the County Council’s art collection, HDC staff and a pupil from Robert Smyth Academy’s sixth form art group.

The three artists are Derek Hunt from Medbourne who works in stained glass; Anne Schwegmann-Fielding from Colchester who is a mosaic specialist; and John Thomson from Hampshire whose work is primarily in metal.
The artists have been given access to a wide range of historical material about the fascinating history of The Symington Building, which has recently been refurbished.

Their proposals for artwork are being exhibited in The Symington Building, as well as on the Council website, and members of the public are welcome to make their views known to assist the panel in making the final decision.
