Giant sandpits return to Market Harborough in July
Published Friday 15 July 2016This month will see the return of the giant sandpits as the hugely popular Harborough by the Sea event gets underway in Market Harborough.
Final preparations are in hand by Harborough District Council, and others, to bring the exciting annual event back to town over the weekend of Saturday 30 July and Sunday 31 July 2016 from 10am to 4pm each day.
This year, in addition to the usual sandpits in The Square, there will be tables and chairs set out so people can relax and enjoy the atmosphere – or enjoy some food and drink
On Saturday 30 July there will be:
- Sandpits, buckets and spades, and traditional deckchairs
- Town cycling trail run by Leicestershire County Council with a prize draw to win one of Olympic medallist Dani King’s cycling jerseys
- Temporary skatepark in Welland Park
- Sports activities and games
- River dipping sessions run by Welland Rivers Trust who will be bringing along their mobile laboratory for children to view ‘bugs’ under a microscope
- Xplorer orienteering for families taking place in Welland Park
- Free to try badminton sessions
- Halfords bike maintenance workshop 11am-12noon
On Sunday 30 July Harborough by the Sea will be delivered in partnership with Churches Together and will include:
- Sandpits, buckets and spades, and traditional deckchairs
- Free craft activities for families run by Churches Together Harborough
- Morning Songs of Praise
- Afternoon tea party run by members of the local Mothers Union with proceeds raised going to the Rainbows charity and the Mothers Union
- Wheelchair basketball
Businesses and shops in Market Harborough town centre are being encouraged to open on the Sunday, if they don’t already, to help boost their takings over the weekend.
Councillor Blake Pain, Leader of Harborough District Council said: “What a wonderful weekend of fun this will be for all the family. As ever, this event is expected to attract families from across the region all hoping for a flavour of the seaside and all the excitement and activities that come with it. Fingers crossed we get good weather for the occasion!”
