Apprentice Stories

Luke Andrew - ICT Officer

Luke joined us as an IT apprentice just as we were coming out of the first lockdown. Despite having all his interviews online, and having to deal with a lot of our staff still working remotely, he soon settled in and made a positive impact straight away. Here’s more about his apprenticeship journey.

Tell us a little bit about the job you do?

I am the second line of support for colleagues who contact the helpdesk with more technical support queries.

What was the apprenticeship you did?

I did a Level 3 Infrastructure Technician along with five separate City & Guilds and Microsoft certifications.

Why did you apply for the apprenticeship position?

I applied to a generic sign up with Baltic apprenticeships online while looking for future opportunities. They called me with the opportunity at Harborough District Council and I took the opportunity to apply for it.

What was the best thing about the apprenticeship?

Being able to learn in all different areas of IT, not just networking or infrastructure.

What were the challenges?

Doing a course while learning is difficult as you have to manage your time well.

How did you find doing the apprenticeship assignments/project and End Point Assessments?

I think I managed my time well as all my assignments were completed in time and to a good standard.

What happened at the end of your apprenticeship?

I completed my EPA and got my qualifications. I then interviewed for the full-time helpdesk position that was available at the time and got the job.

What advice would you give to a new apprentice?

Take every opportunity presented to you.

How has the apprenticeship helped you in your career or in your current role?

The apprenticeship was my 'foot in the door' into the council and allowed me to progress to where I am now.

What else has happened as a result of doing the apprenticeship?

Since getting the full-time helpdesk position, I have been promoted again to ICT Officer.
